I had thought that telling Skylar about the video was going to be the worst part of the situation, but watching the aftermath play out in real time was so much worse. Skylar refused to even look at her phone and she cancelled her plans to visit a local food bank. She had Alina send a truckload of food instead while she stayed inside the tour bus.

“You can’t hide out forever,” I told her after lunch. She had eaten about two bites of food and was now staring blankly at the coffee I’d made for her.

“I know. Scott already told me I’m not allowed to cancel any shows.” She let out a dry laugh. “He did say that people no longer think I’m pregnant after seeing me naked in the video. So at least I’ve got that going for me.”

“Somebody wants his kneecaps broken,” I muttered.

“He thinks I should fire you.” Skylar looked at me without emotion. “He said that the best move would be to get rid of you. Make a statement to the public that I broke up with you after I discovered that you were the one who leaked the video.”

Damn. That wasn’t a bad suggestion. “And? What do you think?”

“I think that it would be a lonely six months to complete this tour without you.”

“Some people are suggesting that you leaked the video yourself. Something about making your image more edgy.”

She laughed. “Because of vanilla sex with you?”

“A former Army Ranger with tattoos and a sketchy background,” I said, trying not to be insulted by how she’d described our night together. She wasn’t exactly wrong. The sex had been far from wild, but somehow I couldn’t bring myself to think of it as vanilla. Maybe because I had enjoyed it so much.

“Do you want to leave?” she asked suddenly. “Is this your way of convincing me to fire you so you don’t have to be the one to suggest it?”

“No, I don’t want to leave you.” I didn’t even have to think about my answer. “But this could all be better for you if I did leave.”

“That’s not true. Maybe you would make an easy scapegoat, but my life wouldn’t be better without you in it. I need you, Jack.”

“So what do you want to do?” I couldn’t ignore the way my chest tightened at those words. Even after I’d hurt her, Skylar still wanted me in her life. She was the first person who’d ever admitted that she needed me.

Skylar took a sip of coffee and a smile played at the corners of her lips. “I’ll do what I always do. Put on a show.”

And that’s exactly what she did. For the next week, Skylar pretended that nothing was wrong. She ignored the stares and whispers from the crew and pretended not to notice when mention of the sex tape would pop up while we were watching television. She was so good at pretending that I almost believed she wasn’t bothered by the news that
